Extension of Paper Recycling to Individual Rooms

Although the Zerowaste taskforce did an excellent job in tackling contamination throughout campus for paper, plastic bottles and aluminium cans, NUS still has not tackled one of the biggest source of its waste as an academic institution – paper.

Although administrative offices have got paper boxes (image - right) to recycle, a large group of users have not be covered so far- the 2000 + faculty staff who often have a room to their own. Previously, it was also not feasible to have door to door collection for these faculty staff as individually, they may not produce lots of paper meant for recycling and it was logistically unprofitable to cover 2000+ rooms for recycling vendors.

Since August 2009, a “spoke and hub” has been introduced. With the housekeeping staff assistance to clear all recycling receptacles, we can now issue every faculty staff located in individual room with a small box (image - below) to recycle their paper.

In August 09, OES has worked with Faculty of Engineering to launch such boxes for recycling for FoE’s faculty staff. Read more...

OES looks forwards to working with other Faculties to tackle the last major source of our paper waste.
We would also like to thank OED – Estate Maintenance staff and especially the housekeeping staff for making this possible.
