In early November 2008, OSHE, OES, OED and SAVE undertook a revamp of the recycling infrastructure. Measures of the revamp include:
Setting up of recycling stations in selected locations. Each recycling station has a bin for plastic bottles, another bin for aluminium cans, and a trash bin.
Bins are clearly labelled to inform the community on the types of wastes which can and cannot be recycled. In addition to the print on the side of the recycling bins, an additional label is placed on the bin cover.
Paper recycling bins are only available at selected common access areas on campus. This is due the potential fire hazard posed by the accumulation of paper in the open.
Paper recycling bins are made available for offices

Following this revamp, there is an improvement in recycling activities on campus as evident through the increase in correct types of recyclables in every recycling bin. We note that bins in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) have the highest level of segregated wastes (See below picture).
Recycling bins in the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) have the highest level of contamination. They contain wastes that cannot be recycled or recyclable wastes were thrown into the wrong bins
Our revamp of the recycling infrastructure and inspection reveal that with concerted effort from various stakeholders, we have observed improvement in recycling activities. However there is still room for improvement and the recycling taskforce will continue to monitor and improve the recycling activities in NUS. We call upon all NUS staff and students to do our part for the environment.
