Green Mark

The Building and Construction Authority of Singapore (BCA) launched their Green Mark Program in January 2005. The objective of the program is to promote sustainability construction and environment-friendly buildings in Singapore, through the implementation of green and innovative building design and technologies that improve energy and water efficiency.

The BCA Green Mark is a point rating system that evaluates a building, be it new or existing, for its performance in environmental sustainability and impact of building on environment. Building will be assessed based on the following five criteria:
BCA Greenmark
1. Energy Efficiency
2. Water Efficiency
3. Environmental Protection
4. Indoor Environmental Quality
5. Other Green Features and Innovation

There are four Green Mark Awards: Green Mark Certified, Gold, GoldPlus and Platinum. Building will be awarded based on its overall Green Mark rating and scoring. Through the Green Mark assessment and certification process, the authority is able to create environmental sustainability awareness among building developers, designers, consultants and builders in Singapore.

As part of the government initiative for the public sector to take the lead on environmental sustainability, NUS has identified 23 existing buildings with air-conditioned area equal or greater than 10,000m2 to be Green Mark certified by year 2020. All new buildings in NUS are required to incorporate green, innovative building design and technologies to reduce environment impact and achieve energy and water efficiency, and to obtain Green Mark certification from BCA.
