Application Information and Guidelines

The Office of Environmental Sustainability (OES) cordially invites students to apply for the 2013 International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Student Sustainability Fellowship.

What is IARU?

The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) is collaboration between ten of the world's leading research-intensive universities who share similar visions for higher education, in particular the education of future leaders.

Established in late 2005, the Alliance comprises The Australian National University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, The University of Tokyo and Yale University.

Campus Sustainability

IARU established a campus sustainability initiative in 2009, with the aim of promoting collaboration between member institutions and developing best practices strategies in environmental management.

About IARU Student Sustainability Fellowship

As part of the Campus Sustainability Initiative, the IARU has established a Sustainability Fellowship Program. This program allows a small number of selected students to work on exchange in the Campus Sustainability Departments of IARU member institutions, undertaking environmental management projects. These projects have an operational focus and in many cases generated outcomes that can be applied more widely.

Selected students will be provided with a stipend to work on targeted campus sustainability projects at IARU member universities all around the world. Projects will be institutional-specific or related to IARU activities; these projects are intended to allow students apply valuable lessons learnt at the host institutions back at NUS.

Commitment

Shortlisted students will choose from a selection of sustainability projects from the IARU universities; the host institutions will then assess the students based on their skills, interest and background. When there is a match, the Student Sustainability Fellows will travel to the host institution to work with their Sustainability office.

They will work a standard [35+ hour] work week and supervision will be provided to the fellows throughout their stay. Apart from conducting the projects, fellows will learn their host institution’s best sustainability practices.

Upon returning to NUS, selected students will do a paid internship for a year [Minimum TOTAL of 100 work hours with NUS OES] where they can apply what they have learnt from IARU universities and contribute to Campus Sustainability in NUS.
