The Trophy’s Journey

Till January this year, this is how I looked- an obsolete defunct bicycle . . . And as luck would have it I landed up in the Office of Environmental Sustainability! Few staring eyes, some wrecking brains and Lo! Out came my smaller bicycle parts, meticulously removed and cleaned by dear Marcus who took care not to harm my fragile parts.

After the tedious dismantling process, the chain ring, cassette and the wheel rim were sent to NAFA International where Miss Oscar Ng took over the charge of giving us a more elegant form. Along with some old kitchenwares, pullring tabs, safety pins and an old transitional LED display light, the process of creative assembly began. My wheel rim was cut into shorter parts of equal length, pull ring tabes joined together, holes drilled into the plate and pots.

Within a period of weeks, we stood together to form a 60 cm tall trophy. The chain ring and cassette majestically rested on the rim, while the chains of safety pins and pullring tabs gave a decorative look to the trophy. Soon came the green paint and ribbons which added on to my beauty.

Finally the Excellence Day had come, when I was the highlight of the day. People were amazed at me, a prize made out of disposed material and I realised I am one of my kind. I stood out while I was lined up with the other trophies. They looked similar, and I knew that I was unique. Soon the emcee announced “ This year’s Inter-hall Environmental Award goes to Temasek Hall” and I knew it was my moment of glory. Mr. Francis Tay Eng Hock, the hallmaster of Temasek held me proudly as the cameras did not stop clicking. The colourful LED light on my base illuminated the main frame as he walked down the stage with me warmly wrapped around his arms.

At the end of it all, I would like to thank all the important people who have made my journey possible. Firstly, my heartfelt thanks to my creator Miss Oscar Ng, Creative Director/ Senior Manager at NAFA International , who was capable of completing me within a short period of weeks, in spite of falling ill from kidney infection earlier. I would like to thank Mr. Marcus Tay Guan Hock who had painstakingly dismantled the bicycle.
