Energy
In NUS, energy consumption makes up about 65 % of the greenhouse gas inventory. Therefore, the key to creating a more sustainable campus is to reduce its energy consumption. This is a daunting challenge given the ever-increasing energy demand to serve a growing research institute like NUS, coupled with our heavy reliance on air conditioning to cool the buildings in the hot and humid climatic conditions of Singapore.
For the past few years, NUS per capita electricity consumption continues a decreasing trend from AY0809 – AY 0910, but the electricity consumption per square meter of Energy Reference Area (ERA) has increased instead for AY0910.
NUS aims to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission by 23% by year 2020. To do that, we will deploy strategies ranging from implementing stringent energy-performance standards for new buildings and retrofits of existing buildings to programmes encouraging our staff and students to practice sustainable habits that reduce energy consumption.
