Clean Energy Demonstration Projects

The university is running several clean energy demonstration projects:

Solar Powered Bus Stop at Center of Arts(CFA) Bus Stop

The Office of Estate and Development embarked on the Solar Powered Bus Stop project to provide electrical power via solar energy conversion to the light fittings and information board at bus stop. Motion sensors were installed to control the lighting consumption based on the utilisation of the bus stop. Light fittings were changed to energy saving LEDs (for both lightings and information board) which reduced the required size of the solar panel and the battery bank. These LEDs also have 80% longer lifespan as compared to the previous fittings.

NUS Eco-Car Project

A stylish, eco-friendly car with high fuel efficiency and low emissions – that was what a team of NUS Mechanical Engineering students set their sights on when they started out to design and build a new eco-car to take part in the prestigious Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2008 competition held in France.

With the Design Incubation Centre at the NUS School of Design and Environment supporting the team with the overall aesthetic design of the vehicle, the final result is a compact, futuristic-looking eco-car that runs on Gas-to-Liquids fuel, which is clear and odourless, containing virtually no sulphur and aromatics, and offers cleaner air quality for cities. Able to cover 100km per liter of fuel, this is the first environmentally-friendly city concept car designed and built in Singapore.
