Phantom Load

Heard of it? Phantom load is the electricity consumed by an appliance when it is turned off. Such appliances give hidden energy cost. A report from University of California Berkeley indicates that phantom load accounts for 6% of national residential electricity consumption.

Hibernate or Sleep?

Do you know the difference? Hibernate saves your workspace (all open windows), then turns the computer off. The Hibernate mode saves energy because the computer goes off completely, but it takes longer for the computer to wake up from hibernation, so it’s not as convenient. Sleep is more complicated because it means different things on different computers. Generally, sleep and standby mean the same thing, where the computer goes into energy-saving mode where it consumes little power.

  Sleep Hibernate
Energy Use 1-6 watts 0 watts
Time to reboot Few seconds 6s to 3 mins

Reduce Meat Intake!

Fight Climate Change with Diet Change

In terms of individual action, this is a simple thing to do to cut your carbon emissions. The livestock industry contributes to 18% of all global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This is higher than the emissions from all planes, cars, and trucks combined!

At NUS, join Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE) in their Food4Thought campaign to reduce meat consumption by going one day a week without meat.
