REAP (Responsible Energy Advocates Program)

09 February 2010
To: All NUS Students

A Sustainability Program presented to you by PowerSeraya
Drawing upon the energy and passion of youth today on the issue of climate change, the REAP is aimed at nurturing tertiary students to be energy advocates in raising awareness and taking action on energy conservation. The REAP is jointly developed by PowerSeraya in partnership with NEA (National Environment Agency) and South West CDC (Community Development Council).

3 components of the programme:
1.

Education – Students will go through a 4-day workshop to learn about sustainability, the relationship between climate change, behavioural change & energy conservation and how to conduct an energy audit.
2.

Community Service – Using the knowledge gained during the workshop, students will help selected households at the South West district to conserve energy. This will be done by i) first conducting an energy audit, ii) proposing an energy saving solution (i.e. fittings and behavioural change) and implementing it, iii) monitoring the progress of the energy saving solution over 3 to 4 months. The community component of the REAP is done in collaboration with South West CDC.
3.

Project Work – Students will also embark on energy conservation projects that have the potential to be applied in Singapore. Projects can be feasibility studies on energy saving solutions/technologies implemented overseas and its applicability in Singapore, emerging technologies and its applicability in Singapore and/or original ideas to conserve energy in Singapore. Projects do not have to be technical in nature and can cover the social change aspects of energy conservation in Singapore’s context. There is no requirement for projects to be implemented. Students have a choice of working on pre-defined projects by PowerSeraya or their own projects. For the latter, the projects have to be approved by PowerSeraya.

Benefits of the REAP program to tertiary students

Practical learning – Students gain knowledge through the workshop and have opportunities to apply the knowledge in real-life through helping households save energy and through project work. Through this programme, students can internalize the environmental practices and implement them in their homes, thereby doing their part for the environment.

Internship opportunities – Students will be given opportunities to pursue internship stints at PowerSeraya, subject to the prevailing selection process for internships.

Recognition – Upon full completion of the REAP, students will have a written testimonial on their contributions to the national effort on energy conservation by PowerSeraya and NEA. In addition, they will also receive a certificate of commendation for their role as energy advocates by the National Environment Agency and PowerSeraya.

Rewards for best household energy savings and best project – Students who help households to conserve the most energy will win prizes either in cash (or in kind). In addition, top performing student(s) for both the project work and community service components (i.e. items 2 & 3 above) will get to win an eco trip to one of the award winning resorts owned by YTL, the parent company of PowerSeraya.
