E-mail Print Font Style | Reduce Wastage!

06 April 2010
To: NUS Faculty, Staff Members and Students

This month, we feature several constructive feedback received from our NUS staff community on how to make simple lifestyle adjustments that are not only environmentally-friendly, they are cost-efficient as well.

E-mail Print Font Style

Following a report dated 25 March 2010 from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay on a cost-efficient environmentally-friendly practice [http://new.whbl.com/news/articles/2010/mar/25/green-enhanced-uw-green-bay-font-change/], we would like to encourage all staff and students in the NUS community to consider changing the print style on their e-mail system from the Arial font to Century Gothic.

According to the report, the university’s information technology director asserts that it costs a lot less when e-mails are printed, as Century Gothic uses 30% less ink than Arial. It means less ink and plastic cartridges to be thrown away – and the IT director says the ink in those cartridges adds up to about US$10,000 a gallon. Century Gothic uses even less ink than the widely-touted “Eco Font.”

Reduce Wastage!

We would like to seek the kind cooperation of all staff and student to do their part in reducing paper wastage on campus by making do with soft copies of NUS’ internal publications wherever convenient.

For staff, kindly re-assess and indicate the number of hard copies of NUS’ internal publications you need by informing the liaison person in your department office.
For students, do think twice about picking up that hard copy of the student newsletters and publications if you already have access to the soft copy version (either via e-mail or online).

Suggestion from Assoc Prof Liang Yung Chii, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering

Thank you.
