Adjustment of Air-Conditioning Default Temperature to 25°C

1.

This circular is to inform all staff and students that NUS will adjust the air-conditioning default temperature set point to 25°C with effect from 22 Oct 2007 onwards, in line with NEA’s recommended guideline.

2.

NUS is committed to protecting the environment. One of our environmental objectives is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing our energy consumption.

3.

We are taking our first big step by targeting energy used by the air-conditioning system. Air-conditioning accounts for about 60% of our overall energy consumption. Users can be assured that comfort level will not be significantly compromised by the adjustment to the air-conditioning temperature set point. Where applicable, users are allowed to manually adjust the temperature using the thermostat to meet their comfort level.

4.

Temperature monitoring exercises will also be carried out campus wide with the assistance of technical experts, and steps will be taken to fine-tune the air-conditioning temperature where required.

5.

However, the University strongly encourages users not to set temperatures below 24°C and to switch off the air-conditioner when not in use. In addition, instead of adjusting the set temperatures, users are encouraged to adjust the fan speed and/or turn on the swing mode to improve ventilation to meet their required comfort level.

Provide service and guidance for activites that help increase environmental awareness, environmental improvement, resource protection and sustainability practices on campus, in Singapore and around the world.

Protection of the environment is everybody’s responsibility. We thank you for your kind understanding and support towards the global cause.
