Yusof Ishak House Refurbishment

With the exit of UHC from Yusof Ishak
House (YIH) to its new premises (the
former Alumni House at Lower Kent Ridge
Road) in April 2009, the University
saw a great opportunity to carve out
more interaction spaces in YIH for
our students.
To meet the needs of the
students, the entire Level 4 (YIH)
vacated by UHC, with some 900m2 floor
space, was released to the students.
The existing student spaces from level
5 to 7 were also re-organized strategically
to allow more efficient use of space.
At the same time, this freed up much
needed space to accommodate cultural
activity spaces such as Performing
Arts Studio, Jam & Dance Studio and
Cultural Club Room.
The previously barren roof terrace
above Munchie Munkie was creatively
refurbished to accommodate student
activities all year round. OSA’s Office
at level 3 was also reorganized to
serve the students better. The Level
3 Student Lounge, together with the
spaces for Level 2 Clubs & Societies,
was reorganized to maximize flexibility in terms of use of precious space on
campus. A new canopy was added to the open space outside the canteen at level
2 and this provides another opportunity to create more interaction space to our
students.
To inject more vibrancy into the building, an open air Plaza (or Mini-Forum)
was carved out in the space between YIH and Ridge View Residences. The Plaza,
(timber-decked and covered with Teflon fabric roof) has since attracted many
student activities besides providing an alternative interaction space for both
students and the community.
The Central Atrium roof cover was replaced with a
raised skylight and this improved natural ventilation within the internal spaces
as well as brought in natural light during the day.
OED took this opportunity
to give the building a new lease of life by replacing the worn out roof cover
and introduced glass facade panels to give the building a fresh frontage.
