1 Why is there a need to upgrade The Deck?
The Deck is more than 25 years old and to meet current National Environment Agency’s (NEA) standards for canteens/food courts e.g. proper separate cooking and serving areas, tray return and washing points, etc, upgrading of The Deck is necessary. With age, frequent problems such as leaking roof, poor ventilation and limited power supply capacity to the existing canteen require immediate attention. And with an increasing number of students patronizing The Deck, it is timely to renovate it so as to enhance its service reliability and seating capacity.

2 What is the architectural concept for the new Deck and what does the design offer?
By capitalizing on its natural hill-top location and exploiting on the panoramic views offered by the sea-lined west coast, an iconic architectural building is created that serves not only as a dining location but also as a new social hub. The design for the new Deck will retain some of the old features of the current Deck .e.g. red brick columns.

The Deck will be reconstructed into a two storey building. The first storey will feature an open-air canteen while air-conditioned cafes will occupy the second storey. Deck customers will have a choice of dining experiences all in one location.

3 After upgrading, what improvements can I experience with the dining environment of The Deck?
Our students and staff customers can dine in better ventilated environments, better hygiene with separate preparation and serving areas for individual stalls, and comfortable seating areas classified according to color zones for easy reference, when dining in a group of two or more.

The 3 air-conditioned cafes at the 2nd storey provide a different dining experience for the campus community to enjoy.

4 Will there be increases in food and drink prices after the upgrading of The Deck?
The prices of food and drinks offered at The Deck will not be increased in the near future after upgrading.

5 How long will the upgrading works take?
The upgrading works will start from 18 November 2006 to 31 July 2007, a period of eight months. This is necessary to ensure that the many requirements for the new Deck Building including quality construction and service reliability are not compromised.

6 During the upgrading period, where else in campus can staff and students have their meals?

7 Will the current stall operators be operating during the upgrading period and when the new Deck is in operations?
During the upgrading period, the Japanese Cuisine Stall and Fruits and Juice Stall will be operating in Eusoff Hall during the following periods:
Japanese Cuisine Stall: 22 November to 10 December 2006,
2 January to 5 May 2007
(Operating Hours: 10am to 3pm)
Fruits and Juice Stall: 2 January to 5 May 2007
(Operating Hours: 10am to 3pm)
13 out of 17 stall operators will return to operate in the new Deck. The 4 following operators will not return:
1) Olive Cove: will focus more on serving at their café outlet @ Blk E2A
2) Ross Muslim Noodles Stall: will operate at Frontier @ FOS from 21 December 2006
3) Fried Kway Teow Stall: current operator will be put in our reserved list for future vacant stall.
We have arranged with the Breakfast stall to offer Fried Kway Teow.
4) Chicken Rice Stall: operator is not interested to operate anymore.
Note:
The current stall operators were informed during selection interviews in 2004 of the likely eight month period of closure and the impact on their livelihood before they took up the offers. The actual date for closure could not be confirmed then as the upgrading proposal was awaiting funding approval. Due to the need to increase seating capacity by 300 seats, the number of stalls at the first storey was reduced to 13 stalls.
