Replacement of Dampa Ceiling at School of Design and Environment
by How Siew Leng
When
you walked through School of Design & Environment (SDE) blocks
recently, did you notice something different? As part of the Campus
Upgrading Phase 2A program to improve the link-ways, old dampa strip
ceilings have been replaced with metal square ceilings, giving the
linkways and common areas a fresh new look.
Discussions
were held with several faculty coordinators and they gave their
valuable input. After much deliberation, yellow was selected as
the colour for the ceiling on the main connecting level while other
areas would be "off-white". An egg-crate panel concept
was also implemented at strategic locations for easy identification
of services and for ease of maintenance.
We learned that good communication with users was key in the successful
implementation the link-way improvement. For this project, communication
channels were kept open and we conducted frequent site visits with
key users. The faculty was also kept informed well in advance of
our work schedule via email.
With the experience gained from this pilot project, our team is
now more confident in implementing the upgrading of common areas
in other faculties. Lastly, we wish to extend our special thanks
to Prof Yu Shi Ming, SDE's students and staff for their kind understanding
and patience throughout this project.
