OED Safety Management System
(By Geraldine Yoon)
Launched
in November 2002, OED's Safety Management System has continuously
strived to achieve its objectives through monitoring and controlling
site safety as well as ensuring that all contractors comply with
OED's safety specifications and statutory legislations.
An appointed Safety Consultant has been conducting regular site
inspections of all construction projects in NUS. Contractors found
to be in violation of safety regulations are imposed with demerit
points. Upon the contractor's rectification of these violations,
a re-inspection is carried out to ensure that the workplace is safe
to both students and staff. Contractors with excessive demerit points
are barred from tendering for NUS projects for a period ranging
from 3 to 12 months.
In June 2003, OED conducted a Safety Training Course and Assessment
Test for project supervisors to ensure that they are familiar with
OED's site safety requirements.
The contractors are fully aware of OED's serious view on site
safety and so far, none of the contractors has accumulated any excessive
demerit points.
Our continual training and awareness talk and the stringent enforcement
of the safety management system have made a difference to our site
safety culture.
OED is now involved with a safety program spearheaded by the Office
of Safety, Health & Environment (OSHE) whose role is to promote
a safe working culture in NUS at the University level. Besides construction
site safety, we also support OSHE in Fire Safety Management and
Prevention in NUS.
