General Crime Prevention Tips


  GENERAL
  • Avoid travelling alone at night - Be aware - recognize your vulnerability. If you need to go out at night, go out with a buddy or in a group.
  • Use well lit and busy sidewalks. If possible, let a friend or room-mate know where and with whom you will be and when you will be back.
  • If you think you are being followed by someone, cross the street to verify and if necessary, cross the street back and forth. If you are being pursued, scream and run to a lighted place, enlist the aid of a passer-by, flag down a passing motorist. Do anything that might attract attention or summon assistance.
  • Do not leave your personal belongings unattended at all times.
  • Carry a whistle or personal alarm. Familiarize yourself with the locations of the security post on campus.
 
SPORTS FACILITIES
  • Confine your running and jogging to daylight hours and to open well-travelled areas. If you have to jog on roads, use footpaths only.
  • If you encounter a male intruder inside the women's locker room:
    • Scream for help. Your call for assistance should carry to the men's side of the locker room.
    • Formulate a description of the intruder in your mind.
    • Inform Campus Security immediately.

  • Work out with a friend and make arrangement to go to and from the gym together.
  • Avoid showering if you are alone in the locker room.
  • Avoid bringing cash, wallets or other valuables to the sports facilities.
  • Report suspicious persons and incidents of theft to Campus Security immediately.
 
HALLS OF RESIDENCE
  • Keep the door(s) to your residence and windows inaccessible from the outside.
  • Never sleep in an unlocked room or house.
  • Do not put your name and address on key rings.
  • Keep items of value out of sight.
  • Never lend the keys/transponder of your residence to others.
  • Request callers to identify themselves before opening your door. On campus residents, you should require official identification from all repair and service personnel.
  • If you find that your room has been broken into, do not go inside. Go to your neighbor and call Campus Security. If you are already inside, do not touch anything. In doing so, you will disturb evidence that is important to police investigations.
  • If you see suspicious person or vehicle on the Campus or in your neighborhood, immediately contact Campus Security or the Police. Try to get the license plate number.
  • Do not hide your keys under mats, in mailboxes, or anywhere else where they can be easily found.
  • Report any illegal subletting to Office of Housing Service and Campus Security.
