Akanksha Batura

Class of 2013
NUS Graduate Student
NUS Business School
University Scholars Programme

Akanksha is always on the go. She is pursuing concurrent and double degrees: a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours), a Master of Science (Management) and a CEMS Master’s in International Management. Akansha is currently on student exchange attending the London School of Economics (Michaelmas Term 2012) and Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Spring 2013). She credits the NUS family – from administrators to professors – for giving her the opportunities and experiences that have made her the savvy global business insider she is today.

About Business School

I chose my faculty because being on the cutting edge in the business world fascinated me. Additionally, I wanted a balance of analytical and soft skills, therefore I chose a double specialisation in finance and marketing.

The professors at NUS Business School have provided impeccable guidance, imparting skill sets and knowledge that I still apply in deliverables for my courses and even in the work environment.

Overseas Experience

I have travelled to countless places and I would not have been able to do that without the solid backing of NUS guiding and encouraging me at every step. My travels have made me a more informed individual, have increased my risk appetite and have allowed me to network with amazing people I would’ve never even known.

I have made lifelong friends while studying overseas. I believe many of their couches will become home to me when I visit them in their countries, and vice versa.

While I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my overseas student programmes, I would highly recommend the Semester At Sea voyages– run by the University of Virginia – to other NUS students as it gives one the most scope for travelling in a unique way, while experiencing a myriad of cultures on the journey.

Other summer and semester programmes I have been fortunate to attend include the Yale University Summer Session, the Cambridge University-IARU Global Summer Session, the Richard Ivey School of Business at University of Western Ontario, London School of Economics, and Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi.

I have also had a number of additional international experiences through NUS: going on the BizAd Abroad trip to China, participating in the NUS Study Trips for Engagement and EnRichment (STEER) programme to the Middle East, representing NUS’ University Scholars Programme at the Harvard College in Asia Programme at Harvard University, representing Singapore in Japan as the Regional Champion of the Asian Job Express Business Case Competition, representing Singapore at the 11th Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative 2012 in Vietnam, attending the Harvard Model United Nations held at Harvard University and representing NUS at the Global Cross-Disciplinary Tournament at the Australian National University. I even completed my internship in the financial sector in New York City due to NUS’ ties with the Academic Internship Council.

What I’ll Miss about NUS

I will definitely miss the global exposure and the inherent curiosity that comes with being an NUS student. During my years at NUS, I have never confined myself to taking courses and modules within my double specialisation of marketing and finance. I have always taken modules outside of my faculty and have signed up for diverse inter- and multi-disciplinary modules and programmes.

Preperation for the Working World

While I have not started working full time yet, I have had work experience via internships and part-time jobs. I believe my interactions with people from all walks of life at NUS and overseas have prepared me to work well with various personalities, skill-sets and cultural backgrounds. The exposure of being in a constantly changing and high-pressure environment full of language and cultural barriers has also honed my leadership, negotiation and communication skills.
