Faculty:
Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS) and University Scholars Programme (USP)

Major:
Psychology with a minor in English Language, Year 1

Co-curricular Activities (CCAs):

I’m active in the University Scholars Club (USC), a student organisation made up of USP  students.

Listed below are some events that I’m involved in:

•    Freshmen Orientation Programme 2010 as Vice-Director, in charge of USP Orientation Week

•    ‘What Makes A Young Champion?’ conference as a Communications Executive to be held in August 2010

•    Council of International Relations (CIR), a student interest group set up by USP seniors. 10 of us from CIR will also be going to Princeton University in February for the Princeton Interactive Crisis Simulation Conference 2010.

•    USC Productions, which will be staging one play in May 2010

Why did you decide to come to NUS?

I felt that NUS would be able to offer me a rigorous programme that I’d be interested in. A programme that I was very attracted to is USP and the multi-disciplinary modules it offered. It appealed to my interest in learning topics outside of my major, and offered the opportunity to interact with people from faculties other than my own.

Studying in NUS also enables me to enjoy the best of both worlds, in the sense that I have the opportunity to go on the Student Exchange Programme to experience learning and living overseas for a semester or two, while staying in Singapore where friends and family are.

Fondest memory at NUS

Honestly, there have been many, many fond memories even though it’s only my second semester at NUS. I treasure all the fond memories from events and projects that I’ve been a part of, such as USP Rag, USP Camp and Orientation Week, Halloween’s Night, hanging out with my friends in Chatterbox (USP student lounge), going to West Coast for pre-orientation preparation etc. Above all, I really, really enjoy the company of my friends in school!

Balancing studying, family, friends and work

Well, be on the ball with your school work, pay attention during lectures and tutorials, and enjoy what you are doing! There’ll be many things that you will want to do in university, so choose wisely so you don’t get tired out. Remember to have some time to yourself and your friends too. All in all, work smart, play hard.

Making Friends

People in university are really friendly, so don’t be afraid to initiate conversations. Seniors are also extremely warm and more than happy to help, so don’t be afraid to approach them and ask them things you’d like to find out more about.

Phoebe’s Favourites

Pastime

I enjoy dancing as it’s something I have been doing since I was five. I haven’t had much time for it since term started but I squeeze in time for it whenever I can. I also enjoy spending time with my church friends and serving in church.

Module

I generally enjoy the modules I’m studying. The modules in psychology which I’m majoring in continue to pique my interest and drive me to learn more. I also find USP modules particularly fun because although they are challenging, they are extremely thought-provoking and expose me to things beyond my usual scope of study. A module which I find interesting currently is called ‘The Birth, Life and Death of Stars’ involving astrophysics, which combines astronomy and physics.

Social networking website

Facebook. I use it to keep in touch with friends, especially friends studying overseas or those studying in institutions different from mine. Facebook also enabled me to re-establish contact with friends whom I haven't met in a long time, such as primary school friends.

Eating place on campus

I usually just head to the The Deck, also popularly known as the Arts canteen or Techno Edge, the canteen at the engineering faculty.

Movie

The movie buff me can’t quite name one movie I like the most. I do have a soft spot for art house films and foreign films, such as Les Choristes and A Very Long Engagement.  I also enjoy films like Lord of the Rings and Transformers which I enjoy watching with my brother.

Music

I enjoy listening to jazz, with Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra being two of my favourite jazz artistes. I also really enjoy listening to Christian music such as Hillsong and Hillsong United, as well as classical music and instrumental movie OSTs (Original Soundtracks). Other artistes I enjoy listening to include Brooke Fraser and Corrine May.

Thing about NUS
