Faculty:
School of Design & Environment

Major:
Architecture, Year 3

Co-curricular Activities (CCAs):

I'm part of the Young Arts House at SDE , otherwise known as YAH. It's a student-initiated group that has been around for almost 10 years. We are housed in a cozy room near SDE’sdesign studios and we offer many modeling materials at low prices, like an on-campus 'Art Friend' store. We seek to complement what isn’t available at the Co-op. For instance, 1.5mm cardboard is available from the Co-op, so we sell 1mm and 2mm ones. Yes, a small 0.5mm difference makes a big difference in architectural models.

YAH is also looking into offering perks for SDE students, particularly near design submission deadlines, which is often a crazy time. Say, provide free cans of coffee or Red Bull or chicken essence. This initiative remains a work-in-progress.

Why did you decide to come to NUS?

Someone once said that everything about architecture could or should be learnt outside of school by observing our surroundings around the world. I agree with that, and am complementing it by choosing to study architecture in NUS and Singapore.

Fondest memory at NUS

Architecture students are allocated design studios, with groups of about 10 occupying one studio. Each studio grouping stays together for one semester. With everyone having their own desks etc, we all have an intimate personal space in the studios. The ‘studio culture’ that emerges is great. You know that there are others who’re in this with you, and we help one another through thick and thin, the highs and lows, the wide and narrow.

Dawn on …

Balancing studying, family, friends and work

Make the effort! I think 'balancing' something means taking some extra care to even some things out, say, time. It also helps to know your priorities, and be flexible sometimes.

 Making Friends

I feel that good friends stay on. But we've also got to make the effort (see above :)

Dawn’s Favourites

Pastime

Really to have nothing to do so that I can do anything!

Module

As in...squares can be quite a nice module to work on in design.

Social networking website

Hmm, I don't really socialise online.

Favourite eating place on campus

I think a nice break from eating at the canteens on campus would be to pack some food and take a drive to the end of the Heng Mui Keng Terrace area. It can be quiet and breezy with some nice views. Be warned though. Campus security guards who pass by may look at you suspiciously.

Movie

I like the film "Once".

Music

I listen to almost anything that's not too noisy or chant-like.

Thing about NUS

When you're not rushing to lectures, tutorials or appointments, I think the paved walkway from SDE adjacent to the Techno edge canteen leading to the road in front of Central Library can provide quite a pleasant calming experience at certain times of the day, with all the greenery and the occasional breeze (:
