- Why has NUS established
the Global Merit Scholarship (GMS)?
The GMS is an apt and fitting contribution to Singapore from
NUS as it celebrates its centennial year, a significant milestone
in the history of the university. The NUS GMS has been set up
to identify and support outstanding Singaporean students who
demonstrate high intellectual capacity, sound character, strong
leadership potential, a passion for creativity and innovation
and a commitment to service. In turn, the presence of these
highly talented students will enrich the learning environment
at NUS and contribute to its place among the best in the world.
- What are the special
features of the GMS?
Global Merit Scholars will receive a unique educational experience
at NUS. They will be allowed to read any course leading to a
first degree, except Medicine and Dentistry. Perhaps more significantly,
the recipients will also have the option of participating in
some of NUS’ most exciting special programmes crafted to allow
students to realise their maximum potential. These include:
- an option to enter the NUS University
Scholars Programme.
- up to one year of academic study in another country under
either the Student Exchange
Programme or NUS Overseas
Colleges Programme, including round trip transportation,
accommodation allowance and additional stipend.
- the option to select from a menu of NUS double degree
or joint degree offerings with overseas universities. Students
will be sponsored for these programmes.
These programmes will ensure that these scholars receive a stimulating
education that satiates their intellectual curiosity and capacity.
- Who is eligible to apply
for the GMS?
Applicants for the NUS GMS must meet the following eligibility
requirements:
- be Singapore citizens;
- have strong leadership qualities and potential;
- have a good co-curricular activities record;
- offer GCE 'A' levels, Diploma from a polytechnic in Singapore or equivalent qualifications (e.g. International Baccalaureate).
Award of the scholarships is based on competition and performance at the Scholarship interviews.
Recipients will be selected from among the best in each cohort.
They will have the intellectual capacity, outstanding leadership,
sound character and a passion for creativity that will enable
them to make a unique and significant contribution to the NUS
community and later to society.
- What are the minimum
academic qualifications required for students sitting the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'A' Level?
Obtained at least 3 ‘A’ grades and a good pass in the General Paper.
- What will the Global
Merit Scholar receive?
GMS recipients will be provided full annual tuition fee,
living and accommodation allowance and additional allowances
for participating in special programmes.
- Which are the approved
courses under the GMS?
All undergraduate courses are approved under the scholarship
scheme, except Medicine and Dentistry.
- Is my financial condition
taken into consideration?
No. The Global Merit Scholarship seeks to recognise the
very best from each cohort. It is needs-blind and does not take
the financial condition of the applicant into consideration.
- When can I apply for
the GMS?
Applicants, who sat for examinations in 2007, should apply for the scholarships even if you do not have actual results. This will enable us to identify interested applicants and proceed to process your application as soon as the A level results are released. The closing date for submission of applications for AY2008-2009 is March 2008.
- When will the interviews
be conducted?
Interviews for short listed candidates will be conducted from mid-April 2008.
- When will I be notified
of my application status?
Applicants can generally expect notification of their application
status by mid April.
- Will I be eligible for other scholarships if I am not awarded the GMS?
All candidates interviewed for the GMS will be considered for NUS Undergraduate (Merit) Scholarship, NUS Undergraduate Scholarship, Faculty Level Scholarship and Faculty Level Award.
