To understand Chinese development, or why China could sustain development in the face of the Asia economic crisis, we need first to gain a deep appreciation of the ongoing changes in China over the last twenty years. The purpose fo this book is to provide an in-depth analysis of some essential issues during the Deng Xiaoping reform as well as during the transition towards the post-Deng era. This volume discusses fundamental problems in three main areas: economic reform, political transition and foreign relations. This volume features the perspective of an important new generation of younger China scholars, who were themselves grew up in China, but earned their PhDs overseas.

Xiaobo HU is Professor at the Department of Political Science, Clemson University.
Gang LIN is an Asia Program Associate at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
