Human Melioidosis

S. D. Puthucheary and J. Vadivelu

Infectious diseases account for a third of all deaths in the developing world, yet the pathogens which affect specifically these predominantly poor people attract little attention. Melioidosis is a case in point. A major disease in these areas, melioidosis strikes slowly, is difficult to diagnose and is potentially fatal. Also of major veterinary importance, it remans an emerging infectious disease with serious implications as an international environmental and public health problem. Melioidosis has also become a current issue because the B. pseudomallei organism is considered a potential agent for biological warfare and biological terrorism. Research into prevention and treatment of melioidosis therefore has an urgency, and it is very important that health professionals are aware of the disease.

This book is written by leading experts in the field as an authoritative text to describe the epidemiology, pathology, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis, management and prevention of an important infection that is little known outside Southeast Asia and Australia.
