for NGS Membership

Application for Membership

NGS is a university-wide endeavour aimed at spearheading world-class trans-disciplinary graduate education and research in science, engineering and related aspects of medicine. The top-quality students enrolled in NGS are supervised by leading staff from NUS, the Research Institutes and Industry.

The vision for NGS is:

  • To be among the world's leading graduate schools..
  • To nurture top-quality researchers for Singapore.


To accomplish this vision NGS:

  • Appoints passionate and energetic faculty members of international caliber from within NUS, the Research Institutes (RIs) and Industry.
  • Develops internationally-benchmarked doctoral programs.
  • Recruits talented and motivated students.
  • Facilitates access to world-class research facilities.
  • Is advised by an international advisory board from top notch overseas graduate schools.


Criteria for Membership

A - Established Scientists
   (Usually Associate or Full Professors)

  • An enthusiasm for the aims of NGS.
  • International distinction in research, preferably of an integrated nature.
  • Good track record of student supervisions.
  • Tme and willingness to mentor and supervise research students.
  • Time to participate in NGS activities, including curriculum design, student recruitment,
    innovative coursework, and mentoring younger NGS members.


B- Promising Young Scientists
   (Usually Assistant Professors)

  • An enthusiasm for the aims of NGS.
  • Substantial promise of performing high impact integrative research.
  • Substantial grant income or ability to compete for peer-reviewed grants.
  • Tme and willingness to mentor and supervise research students.
  • Time to participate in NGS activities, including curriculum design, student recruitment and
    selection and innovative coursework.

Membership of NGS is for two years in the first instance and is then reviewed.

Application Procedure

NGS invites applications from qualified individuals. The applications will be reviewed by an NGS Membership Committee consisting of current senior members of NGS. The Committee’s recommendations will be forwarded to the NGS Board, which will make the final recommendations. For candidates who wish to be eligible for supervising A*STAR Graduate Scholars (funded by the A*STAR Graduate Academy), the Board’s recommendations need to be endorsed by A*STAR.

The application must be made on the attached Application Form through the Head and the Dean. Please send the completed application form and the supporting materials to:
