PhD Qualifying Exam

Students must take a qualifying examination to assess their fitness to progress to the PhD degree not later than 24 months from the time of registration.

Examination Format:

  1. A detailed and comprehensive written progress report

  2. An oral presentation to the TAC (which includes an oral defence)

Procedures

Student

To complete PhD Qualifying Examination Form (Section A) & submits to his main supervisor with the following documents:

  • Written Progress Report (prefaced by 1 page abstract & not exceeding 10 pages)
  • Copies of any manuscript(s) submitted, accepted or published.
Student

To schedule a suitable date & time for examination (oral presentation & oral defence) with Supervisor & TAC members.

Note:

  • Date & venue may be decided upon by the student & TAC.
  • NGS does not need to be involved.
TAC To conduct the examination & recommend continuation/termination of candidature of the student.

To forward the completed PhD Qualifying Examination Form to the NGS office no later than 1 week from the date of examination.
NGS

Reviews the comments and approves/disapproves continuation of student's candidature in consultation with AGA.

Student and TAC members will be notified through a letter on the outcome of the examination.
