About Supervisors

Q01.

Any restrictions on the selection of main/co-supervisors?

A01.

1. NUS & RI main supervisor must be member of NGS.
2. A co-supervisor may be appointed to share responsibility for student supervision, but this is not essential. If an official co-supervisor for an RI-based student is appointed, he/she must be in the A*STAR approved co-supervisors list.

Q02.

Is more than 1 co-supervisor allowed?

A02.

Yes. However, only 1 co-supervisor is allowed in the Thesis Advisory Committee.

Q03.

Is a change of supervisor allowed during the PhD course of study?

A03.

It is subject to the approval of NGS, your existing supervisors and the proposed new supervisors.

Q04.

What is the application procedure to be an NGS Supervisor?

A04.

NUS faculty staffs: To apply directly to NGS using the relevant application form (with the supporting material specified in the Application Form). 
The application should be endorsed by the applicant's Head of the Department and Dean and will be reviewed by an NGS Membership Committee consisting of current senior members of NGS.
The Committee's recommendations will be forwarded to the NGS Board, which will make the final recommendations

Q05.

Will NGS members be paid by NGS?

A05. No, staff remains part of their Department and Faculty. They are responsible to NGS only for supervision of NGS students and a limited amount of graduate teaching.

Q06.

What is the distinction between Senior and Junior NGS Faculty Members?

A06.

SENIOR

  • An enthusiasm for the aims of NGS.
  • International distinction in research.
  • Good track record of student supervisions.
  • Time and willingness to teach and supervise research students.
  • Time to participate in NGS activities, including curriculum design, student recruitment, innovative coursework, and mentoring junior NGS members.

JUNIOR

  • An enthusiasm for the aims of NGS.
  • Substantial promise.
  • Publications/awards (BMRC, Temasek, SERC, etc).
  • Substantial grant income or ability to compete for peer-reviewed grants. \
  • Time to participate in NGS activities, including curriculum design, student recruitment and selection, and innovative coursework.
