About NGSS

Q01.

How do I apply and when is the closing date?

A01. Application forms can be downloaded from http://www.ngs.nus.edu.sg/NGSS.shtml.
Application is open throughout the year. Students who are shortlisted will be admitted/enrolled into the next nearest intake, subject to NGS's approval. Those who are not enrolled into the typical intakes (ie. the January and August intake) can choose to start on their research first.

Q02.

Is this a part-time graduate programme?

A02.

No. Currently, NGS only offers full-time programs.

Q03.

What are the admission requirements?

A03.

Applicants must have 1st Class Honours or very good 2nd Class Upper Honours (or equivalent qualifications).

Q04.

Who is eligible for NGSS?

A04.

NGSS is OPEN worldwide to all Local and Foreign students as they are encouraged to undertake A*STAR International Graduate Scholarships. Singaporeans are also eligible but are strongly encouraged to apply for AGS first.

Q05.

Are there any admission interviews and/or tests?

A05. Shortlisted applicants are usually required to attend one or more interviews. The usual periods of interview for the Aug intake will be in Dec/Jan; Jan intake June/Jul.

Q06.

Are GRE / TOEFL compulsory at the point of application?
I have good command of the English language, can I be exempted from the GRE/TOEFL tests?

A06.

GRE is compulsory for all students who are applying from overseas. Please take the GRE General Test.
TOEFL is compulsory for applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English.

Foreigners who had studied in NUS/NTU are exempted from the GRE/TOEFL.

Q07.

What if I have missed the GRE/TOEFL test date, can I still apply for the scholarship?

A07. Yes, you may still apply for the scholarship. Nevertheless you are required to submit or show documentary proof that you have registered for the GRE /TOEFL tests soon. You are also required to indicate your test date on the application form.
   
 
   
Q08.

What is your requirement of GRE & TOEFL results?

A08.

We do not have a specific score requirements as the review process will be a holistic one which will take into consideration the applicant's other academic performance, other than GRE.

   
 
   
Q09.

Does NGS only accept the English score sheets (GRE and TOEFL) that are directly posted by ETS? I wonder whether I can send the copy of the score sheets I received from ETS as my application materials?

A09.

Where possible, please send us the certified true copy of your score sheets received from ETS.

Q10.

Is there any specific requirement on the CAP for overseas applicants?

A10.

As a general guideline, applicants should have obtained a minimum of 85% for all the modules that he/she has taken in his/her undergraduate course.

   
 
   
Q11.

If my proposed supervisor in NUS is not in your list, can I still apply for NGS scholarship?

A11.

You may still apply for NGS scholarship and nominate other supervisors who are under the NUS list instead; http://www.nus.edu.sg/ngs/ngs_supervisors.shtml.  Alternatively, your proposed supervisor may wish to consider applying for the NGS membership.

   
 
   
Q12.

Can I apply for both NGS and some other NUS graduate program?

A12.

Yes, you may apply for the scholarships offered by NGS as well as other departments in NUS. However, do note that the application process between NGS and other department is different.  Hence you would have to apply separately.

   
 
   
Q13.

I am planning to apply to both NUS and NGS, is that necessary?  I heard that the application materials received and rejected by NGS will be sent to NUS for consideration, is that true?

A13.

You could apply for other scholarship programme(s) in NUS concurrently. Where deemed appropriate and at the discretion of the review panel’s recommendation, some of the applications may be directed to other department in NUS.

   
 
   
Q14.

How will the applicants be notified?

A14. Shortlisted applicants will be notified by email or phone to be present for the interview. Rejected applicants will be notified through a letter sent to them by email.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

A15.

Normally, the outcome should be known within 3 months from the closing date of your application.

Q16.

What is the similarities and difference between A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (AGS) and NGS Scholarship (NGSS)?

A16.

Similarities

  • Both are PhD programmes
  • For both programmes, students are registered at NUS under NGS
  • For both programmes, coursework requirements are similar . to follow NGS curriculum
Differences
AGS is a collaboration between A*STAR Graduate Academy (AGA) and NGS and for this scholarship, students are funded by A*STAR. On the other hand, NGSS is funded by NGS itself.

Q17.

What is the similarities and difference between NGSS and SINGA?

A17.

Benefits, such as monthly allowances differ between the 2 scholarships.

-  Students under the SINGA will be attached to one of the Faculties/Schools, depending on the choice of their research area and supervisor.  Students will follow the Faculty/School's coursework requirements.

- Students awarded the NGSS will be enrolled in NGS and follow our coursework requirements (which is different from what each Faculty/School prescribe). Choice of supervisor will have to be selected from the NGS list of approved supervisors.

For the field on proposed supervisor(s) in the application form, is it necessary to complete the information?

A18. No, you need not indicate the proposed supervisor(s) if you are unable to at this stage. This will be discussed with the shortlisted candidates.

Q19.

For the field on proposed research topic in the application form, do I have to complete the section if I do not have a specific topic in mind?

A19.

If you do not have one in mind, you should, however, indicate the research area(s) that you are interested in.
