Q01. What is laboratory rotation?

About Laboratory Work

Q01.

What is laboratory rotation?

A01.

The student is attached to a laboratory outside that of the supervisor to carry out some research work. 2.5 MCs will be allocated per rotation lasting for at least 2 months.

Q02.

Is laboratory rotation compulsory?

A02.

No, it is not.  Students are only strongly encouraged to participate in at least two 2 month laboratory rotations, usually in the first or second year of the PhD programme.

Q03.

Do you have a list of laboratories which the students could select from?

A03.

All laboratories in the faculties/schools or research institutes are available, so long they are supported by the students’ supervisors and approved by NGS.

Q04.

For lab rotations, do I have to select from the list of NGS supervisors only?

A04.

No, it is not. Students may also be attached to labs of non-NGS supervisors, for example other NUS academic staff at NUS, as long as the supervisor supports it.

Q05.

Are NGS students allowed to supervise JC, Honours and UROP students undertaking research projects in laboratories:
(i) not under the supervision of their Main Supervisors?
(ii) in places other than their host institutions?

A05. Yes. However, all supervisors should provide feedback via the Main Supervisor of the NGS students. Normally, we would expect the students to be in the Main Supervisor or Co-Supervisor's (if any) laboratory.

Could I do a lab rotation outside of NUS?

A06.

Yes, you could.

Is working on a project not supervised by the main/co-supervisor considered equivalent to laboratory rotation?

A07.

No, this is not considered.

Q08.

Can MCs be assigned for lab rotation?

A08. Yes, it can be. Only a maximum of 2.5 MC.

Q09.

If Supervisor of the Laboratory for Research Supervision is not the Main Supervisor of the NGS student, who is required to endorse the hours clocked for the supervision?

A09. Only the Main Supervisor's signature is required. However, he/she is responsible for verifying the accuracy of all information before submission to the NGS office.

Q10.

Are NGS students required to source for the list of honours, JC and UROP students available for research supervision in their host institution and propose to NGS?

A10. No need as the Main Supervisor proposes this and identifies students to be supervised.
