About Coursework, Modules and Undergraduate Teaching

Q01.

Can graduate modules taken for Masters Programme be counted towards the coursework requirements?

A01.

Transfer of credits is allowed.  Students have to submit the “Transfer of Credits”  Form (available on NGS website).  NGS will review the modules read and approve on a case-by-case basis, the number of modules allowed for transfer.

Q02.

What coursework is available for study?

A02.

NGS students may register for modules offered by Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, School of Computing, subject to the approval of NGS, your supervisors and the Faculties/Schools concerned.

Q03.

Could we spread our coursework over 4 years?

A03.

Yes, it is possible, but please consult your supervisor about it.  Most students will usually try to complete most of their coursework by Year 2, so that they could concentrate on your research work for the next 2 years of their  candidature.

Q04.

What are the pre-requisites for taking the PhD Qualifying Examination (QE)?

A04.

None. Consult your supervisor when is the appropriate time for you to take your QE before scheduling your Oral Defence with your TAC, no later than 24 months from the start of your candidature.

Q05.

In the event that my supervisor proposed that I spread my coursework over 4 years, could I still sit for the PhD Qualifying Examination which is taken not later than 24 months after registration?

A05. Yes, it is possible, as long as your supervisor feels you are ready for your QE, you may proceed.

Q06.

Am I subject to the coursework requirements of the departments I am attached to?

A06.

No. All students registered under NGS are required to fulfill the coursework requirements stipulated by NGS. In other words, you adhere to NGS’ coursework requirements and not the department’s. Please see Coursework Requirements for further details.

A07.

In the various NUS, at the Faculties/Schools offering the modules.

Q08.

Is transfer of credit allowed for graduate modules previously taken and passed?

A08. Yes, transfer of credits is allowed.  Students have to submit the “Transfer of Credits”  Form (available on NGS website).  NGS will review the modules read and approve on a case-by-case basis, the number of modules allowed for transfer.

Q09.

What happens if the modules allocated for undergraduate teaching clash with our lessons?

A09. Students are to liaise directly with the respective departments regarding the slotting of the undergraduate laboratory / tutorial sessions into their timetable and ensure there are no clashes.

Q10.

Does work done towards helping a lecturer prepare for his course e.g. preparation of lecture notes and slides, count as undergraduate teaching?

A10. No. For practical demonstrating, only direct hours to be clocked. For tutorials, an equivalent number of hours per week preparing for the tutorials (i.e preparation for own teaching), having consultation etc could count towards hours clocked for undergraduate teaching.

Q11.

Are students allowed to teach graduate modules to fulfill the teaching requirement?

A11.

Generally no, but students in years 3 and 4 may be allowed to do this with support of supervisors and subject to NGS approval.

Q12.

What are the guidelines for coursework modular credit under NGS?

A12. Students need to clock a minimum of 35 MC, of which 4MC represents the ethics course. The rest of the modules can be modules offered by other faculties/schools.

Q13.

What does S or US means?

A13. It refers to the results of the module which is reflected as S or US. S means Satisfactory and US means Unsatisfactory. S/US modules do not compute towards the CAP for the semester. Once the S/US option is exercised, it will be irrevocable for the module.

Q14.

What are the guidelines for requesting to read graduate modules on Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/US) system?

A14.

1.  The graduate modules must be outside their main undergraduate discipline.
2.  Students must get the approval of their supervisors/TAC.
3.  Students may request for up to 3 modules (12MC).

Q15.

Is it compulsory to assist in undergraduate teaching every semester?

A15.

You may choose not to participate in the above teaching for every semester. However, please note that you are required to clock minimum 40 hours in total over 4 years. This normally should be completed by the end of the second year of enrolment at NGS.

Q16.

When and how do I register for modules?

A16.

Registration of modules takes place at the start of each semester, in August and January. NGS will notify students through email about the registration periods as well as the registration process.

Q17.

Do I have to follow strictly the Add or Drop periods of the registration of modules?

A17.

Yes, you have to.  The faculties/school hosting the modules keep closely to the add/drop periods. Unless it is a special case, students are usually not allowed to add/drop outside of the stipulated timelines.

How do I check on the modules and grades I have obtained during my candidature?

A18.
