White Coat Ceremony cum
Dinner with NGS' New International Advisory Panel

NGS wishes to congratulate all NGS students who have passed their PhD Qualifying Examination.  It is a milestone worth celebrating as they continue on to the next phase of their candidature in the pursuit of their PhD.

As an encouragement to these students, NGS presented them a token in a “White Coat Ceremony” held on 28 February 2011 at the Shaw Alumni Foundation House.

Why the term - In medical school, they have what is known as the “White Coat Ceremony” to commemorate the graduation of aspiring doctors. Scientists are also often dressed in white. So NGS decided to adopt this term “White Coat Ceremony” to mark this important milestone of our aspiring and budding scientists.

The NGS Teaching Commendation Award, which aims to recognize NGS Faculty members who have delivered outstandingly commendable teaching in NGS subjects in Academic Year 2009/10, was also launched in the same joyous occasion.

The inaugural NGS Teaching Commendation Awards were presented to

  1.  1)  Associate Professor Thorsten WOHLAND, who has been an NGS Faculty Member since September 2006, and

  2. 2)   Dr YEN Shih-Cheng, who has been an NGS Faculty Member since February 2010.

This Award recognizes both Prof Wohland’s and Dr Yen’s command of abundant, multi-disciplinary knowledge, for being able to communicate and elucidate theories and concepts exceedingly well, and for stimulating higher interest and thinking in the subject matters in our students.

We congratulate both for their wonderful contributions to NGS.
