Information Session on
"Cross-disciplinary PhD Research in Computational and Systems Biology"
Computational & Systems Biology (or Bioinformatics) is an emerging field of research in Singapore. Being inter-disciplinary, it applies the techniques of computer science, applied mathematics and statistics to address biological problems. It brings together various research groups from NUS, NTU, Duke-GMS, Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory and A*STAR, whose research foci span genomic sequence analysis, proteomic data analysis, phylogenetic analysis, imaging data analysis, population genetic, etc.
The objective of this information session was to give graduating students a more detailed overview, but nonetheless still a snapshot, of the growing and expansive research in Bioinformatics, from the ground up.
The speakers included
1) Assoc Prof Ken Sung
-
School of Computing
-
Senior Group Leader, Genome Institute of Singapore, A*STAR; and also
-
Chief Coordinator of Computational & Systems Biology programme in NGS
2) Dr Victor Tong
-
Principal Investigator & Assistant Head, Data Mining Department, Institute for Infocomm Research
-
Adjunct Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine
3) Dr Charlie Lee

Dr Tong and Dr Lee also shared about the exciting research they are currently doing, and its ramifications and/or potential future applications.
