You are allowed to apply simultaneously to multiple PhD programmes that come under different Faculties/Schools in NUS, if you wish to be considered for more than one Faculty/School. However please note each application must have its own set of application fee payment and supporting documents.

Unless granted approval by our University, no candidate may concurrently be a student for more than one degree or register as an NUS candidate and of another university/institute.

Unless otherwise indicated, these supporting documents are to be:

  • a) compiled into a single PDF file, and email to ngsbox4@nus.edu.sg - please cap your PDF file
    size at 10 MB,
    AND
  • b) included in your hardcopy package to be mailed to NGS (refer to Submission of Application below).

As much as possible, (a) and (b) should mirror each other. The variations are Transcript, Referee Reports, and possibly Application Fee payment.

Please note the critical importance of this One-page CV, and thus the required information therein. Should there be any changes after submitting your application documents, you are strongly advised to email us your revised One-page CV, duly signed, and dated according to last date of revision.

Statement of Purpose

Applicants are required to describe their reasons and motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in NGS.

Essay

Research Proposal

Applicants are strongly recommended to submit details of their research proposal and give the significance and aims of the project.

Publication(s)

Please submit a copy of each of your publication(s), if any.

The journal’s “Impact Factor” field (which allows input of up to one decimal point) is essentially a measure of scientific impact that is based on citation rates for an article or other citable item.  It also takes into account the significance of the journals in which result has been published.  Please leave it blank if you are unsure.

Transcript

An official transcript of academic records is required from each university you have attended.  You are responsible for requesting the transcript(s) from the relevant University.   Please use the prescribed form for such request.

Transcripts must be enclosed in an official SEALED envelope with its flap bearing the security seal of the university and the signature of the Registrar or representative. 

Graduates from NUS can submit copies of their result slips or official transcripts of their academic records.

GRE

GRE is

  • compulsory for all applicants, Please note it cannot be substituted by GATE.
  • compulsory for NUS and NTU Masters students and graduates.
  • only waived for NUS and NTU Bachelor degree holders and final-year undergraduates.

Please ensure you enclose in both your PDF and hardcopy dossier, either

  • a complete PDF printout of your official results

    OR

  • a clear, sharp and complete scan / copy of your official results certificate.

TOEFL / IELTS*

Compulsory for applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not in English.

Please note that the TOEFL/IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.  If it has been more than two years since you last took the test, you must take it again to have the scores reported.

Please ensure you enclose in both your PDF and hardcopy dossier, either

  • a complete PDF printout of your official results

    OR

  • a clear, sharp and complete scan / copy of your official results certificate.

Referee Reports

It is compulsory to submit TWO Academic Referees’ Reports.

After you have completed and submitted your online application – less your Academic Referees’ reports, your Academic Referees will each receive an email containing a link, which they can access to complete an online Referee Report form. Of course, this means you must ensure you key in correctly your Academic Referees’ email addresses in your online application form. 

If your referees do not receive the auto-generated emails, please email ngsenquiry@nus.edu.sg, stating

  • your NGS’ application number, and
  • your Referee(s)’ name and title.

All supporting documents which are not in English must be accompanied by an official certified English translation.

Supporting documents submitted are not returnable. 

Application fee top

S$50 per application (inclusive of prevailing Goods & Services Tax) – non-refundable for all programmes you apply for.

Please send your proof of payment together with your application package. 

Please note that an application without the application fee payment will not be processed.

Choose any ONE single mode of payment:

Local Students:

a. Online Payment via

  • Credit Card (AMEX, VISA or MasterCard).

  • Debit Card (applicants must have a online banking account with either of the following banks - POSB/DBS, UOB or Citibank). 

Applicants should login to the Graduate Admission System to check the status of their payment a few days after payment is made.

b. Complete the Application Fee Form and send it together with a crossed cheque made payable to “National University of Singapore”.  Please write your name, mailing address and programme (Graduate Research Programme at NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering) applied for at the reverse side of the cheque; or

c. Complete the Application Fee Form and make payment by NETS at the Student Service Centre (located at Level 1, Yusof Ishak House) during operating hours.

   

International Students:

a. Online Payment via

  • Credit Card (AMEX, VISA or MasterCard).

  • Debit Card (applicants must have a online banking account with either of the following banks - POSB/DBS, UOB or Citibank). 

Applicants should login to the Graduate Admission System to check the status of their payment a few days after payment is made.

b. Complete the Application Fee Form and send it together with a bank draft (drawn on a bank in Singapore in either Singapore dollars or US dollars equivalent) made payable to “National University of Singapore”.  Please write your name, mailing address and programme (Graduate Research Programme at NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering) applied for at the reverse side of the bank draft.

c. If you are unable to obtain a bank draft in Singapore dollar, you may submit a bank draft in US dollar, equivalent of S$50. Please note all bank charges are to be borne by the applicant.

Note:

For cheques and bank drafts drawn in USD, please submit a bank draft of USD38.50. This amount is inclusive of a bank surcharge of USD2.50.


Please note that an application without the application fee payment will not be processed.

Submission of Application top

Requesting us to make any changes will delay your own application.

Thus, please ensure all is proper and complete before you "Submit" your online application.

Thereafter, please
  • print out your completed application form.
  • sign the form.

For simultaneous application of both NGS' PhD (NGS Scholarship) and NUS PhD-MBA, you need only:

If you have submitted the completed application (with all the required documents) before the application closing date, your application will be processed and you will be informed officially of the outcome of your application.

Completed / Incomplete application received after the respective application deadline will be considered for the next Intake.

If successful, you will receive an admission package containing information and relevant forms together with your letter of offer. 

Due to the large number of applicants seeking admission, we are sorry we will not be able to attend to enquiries on the status of applications or receipt of documents. If you are concerned about the delivery of your documents, you may wish to consider sending them via registered mail or courier.

In general, you will be notified on the confirmed receipt of your application package within approximately 4 weeks after the respective application closing dates.

Important notes to applicants.
a)     The University has not engaged any external agencies to undertake student recruitment on its behalf. Candidates interested in our graduate programmes are advised to apply directly to the University and not through any agents. Candidates who apply through agents will not have any added advantage in gaining admission and the University reserves the right to reject such applications without giving reasons.

b)    Applicants should note that the research experience gained during or after your studies is invaluable to you, and could add weight to your reference letter. It would be one of the important  factors for the review of your application. Please take this into account in your application. 

c)     Applicants doing a Masters programme at the point of application

    • must have officially completed the Masters programme, and
    • must have been conferred the Masters degree
       before matriculating in NGS for PhD at NGS.
       Applicants who have submitted their Masters thesis only, but who
    • have not officially graduated from the Masters programme, and
    • have not been conferred the Masters degree
       must therefore defer their admission (from matriculation to registration) into NGS, until the Masters degree has been officially awarded.
d)    Applicants
    • required to serve any bond after graduation from existing (be it Bachelor / Master’s) programme,  and who intend to commence their NGS’ PhD immediately after official graduation
    • and/or
    • serving any bond at the point of application to NGS’ PhD
        should declare such information in the Questionnaire section of the application form.

        Successful applicants should automatically, in their own initiative, apply for deferment of serving of the bond.  The official memo documenting the approval of deferment of bond service should be submitted to NGS at least one month before matriculation into NGS’ PhD.

Correspondences from the University top

NGS will correspond with you primarily using e-mail and the online status enquiry during application process to convey messages such as requesting for outstanding documents, interview notification etc. 

Hence, it is very important that you provide a valid and correct e-mail address and maintain your e-mail account regularly.   The University will not be responsible for undeliverable e-mails and their consequences.

Rejection of Application top

Inaccurate or false information or omission of material information or no application fee payment will render your application invalid.  The University reserves the right to reject applications that are incomplete or inaccurate.  Persons admitted on the basis of inaccurate or false information may be expelled.
