NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering

Heartiest congratulations to our alumnus, Dr Melissa Jane Fullwood for winning the Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) Fellowship Award 2013!

The aim of this award is to attract young, promising and passionate researchers in various fields of science and technology to add to Singapore’s research talent pool and help sharpen the nation’s scientific and technological edge.

The 5th NGS Students’ Symposium L.O.R (Life, Opportunities, Research) 2013 was held on Jan 25, 2013 at University Hall Auditorium.

L.O.R. 2013 showcased the diversity of research topics undertaken by NGS-ians, through 12 oral presentations and 21 poster presentations. It was an excellent platform for our young scientists to share their findings and hone their presentation skills. Participants of the symposium were introduced to new frontiers in computational science, nanotechnology, material science, sustainable energy, bioengineering and medicine through this one day event.

A big “Thank you!” to the Organizing Committee and all presenters who have made this event a success.

  • Best Oral Presenter: Tang Qianqiao (Influence of CD137L Signaling in Myelopoiesis during Acute and Chronic Inflammation)

  • Best Poster: Michal Dykas (Super-resolution Scanning Helium Ion Microscopy for Biological Imaging)

The Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS), an international research meeting for bright young researchers from all over the world to meet, learn from and interact with eminent scientists from diverse fields including 9 Nobel Laureates, 2 Millennium Technology Prize winners, 2 Turing Award winners and a recipient of the Fields Medal.

The inaugural GYSS @ one-north was held from 20 – 25 January with the theme “Advancing Science, Creating Technologies for a Better World”.

Two students from NGS participated in this meeting:

  • Daniel Yim Guo Rong

  • Benjamin Mate Gyori

Organized by The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), HOPE Meetings give opportunities to excellent graduate students and young  researchers to engage in interdisciplinary discussions with Nobel laureates and other distinguished scientists pioneering the frontiers of knowledge. It is hoped that the experience the students and researchers gain at the meeting will inspire and motivate them to become excellent scientists able to shoulder the future of science and technology.

Five NGS PhD students, Kwok Hui Si, Deng Niantao, Teo Teck Hui, Juan Wen Chun and Terence Goh Bing Hui, who specialize in the area of Life Sciences (or related fields) participated in the 5th HOPE Meeting from 26 February to 2 March 2013 in Tokyo.
