    General Matters

    How do I print out the course information from the NEX Website?
    For specific course categories or the whole catalogue, it will be more efficient to obtain the information by clicking on Course Catalogue from the left-hand menu.

    Click again on the categories of your interest and print out the PDF files which interest you. Alternatively, you may go directly to the individual course write-ups through Programmes & Courses or Learning Quicklinks and print from there.

    How do I obtain a hard copy of the course calendar?
    You may register to be on our mailing list at our Homepage. Please fill in your particulars and click Submit. Do allow us about 3 working days to process your request and 2 days (local mail) to reach you at your mailing address as indicated. You will also receive news through email on the events organised by NUS Extension.

    Registration

    When does registration begin?
    Registration begins upon the announcement of courses on our website. You are encouraged to apply promptly for the courses that interest you as some of these courses may be taken up quickly due to their popularity. Organisations are invited to make corporate reservations for staff whom they are sponsoring.

    How do I register for the courses?
    You may download a copy of our application form from our website or call us at 6338 8400 to request for an application form by fax or mail.

    Complete the application form and send it back to us (email : nexquery@nus.edu.sg) together with your cheque payment. Kindly make all cheques payable to: National University of Singapore.

    Please understand that we will only process applications after we have received the completed application form and valid payment document from you. In this case, we would appreciate if you do not post-date your cheque.

    If we are not able to get in touch with you after one week of your application, you may contact us to find out about the status of your application. Please call up the centre to which you have addressed your application form.

    What is the deadline for course registration?
    You are strongly encouraged to submit your application forms 14 days prior to the date of commencement. As courses are usually filled well in advance of starting dates, we recommend that you make an early registration.

    Are NEX courses SDF (Skill Development Fund) subsidised?
    The list of NEX courses which are SDF-subsidised may be found <here>. Companies will need to apply to SDF directly for subsidisation.

    How do I make a corporate reservation?
    Sponsoring organisations can make reservations for their staff members by faxing us a note on their organisation's official letterhead or sending an email to nexquery@nus.edu.sg. Payment for the reserved seats should be made within a week.

    For corporate sponsorship involving groups of 10 or more people, we encourage you to contact us for customised in-house courses.

    How do I arrange for in-house programmes?
    In-house programmes can be arranged if you provide details of your training request to our programme managers in charge of the respective training focus.

    Will I get a full refund of course fees if I withdraw from the course?

    Refund requests will be considered on a case by case basis.

    Can I get on a waiting list if a class is full?

    NUS Extension does not maintain official waiting lists. If a course you want is full, we encourage you to register for an alternative intake.

    What if the course I enrolled in gets cancelled?
    NUS Extension reserves the right to cancel a course, for reasons including insufficient enrollment.

    Enrollment

    Once I am confirmed a place for a course, how will I be notified?
    NUS Extension will send you more information within 7 days from the date of confirmation of your participation. Information provided includes details like course date, time and venue. However, please contact us if you still have not received our confirmation 3 days before date-of-commencement.

    How can I drop a course?

    You may drop a course by giving us a written notice of withdrawal in not less than 10 working days prior to course commencement. In this case, only 90% of the course fees will be refunded.
    All requests must be submitted by mail, email (nexquery@nus.edu.sg), fax (6339 4560), or in person.

    Will classes be held over Public Holidays?
    All classes conducted by NUS Extension observe all Public Holidays in Singapore. No class meetings will be held.

    Can I use NUS library facilities?
    NUS Extension course participants are not granted library privileges as training materials will be provided for its courses. The same applies to online library resources.

    Can I get an NUS email address?
    Only NUS faculty, staff, and matriculated students who have been formally admitted to the university’s undergraduate or graduate programmes are eligible to have NUS email addresses.

    Can I get access to NUS facilities, such as the Guild House and sports facilities?
    Only NUS faculty, staff, and matriculated students who have been formally admitted to the university’s undergraduate or graduate programmes are eligible to use these facilities.

    I have shifted. How can I update my new address?
    You may email us with your name and new address to nexquery@nus.edu.sg and indicate that you have changed your address. We will make sure that your new address is updated into our database, so that you can continue to receive the latest course information and news on our events.

    Course-related

    Where are NUS Extension courses held?
    Our courses are mostly held at NUS Extension (Park Mall). However, NUS Extension reserves the right to make changes in venue, or to combine classes for operational reasons.

    Please provide us with your contact number so that we can contact you if there is a change in the venue.

    If I miss a training session, will there be a make-up session?
    There will be no make-up session(s) if the participant is not able to attend the class.

    Do participants need to pay additional charges for course handouts and books used for NUS Extension courses?
    NUS Extension course fees are inclusive of all training materials and books unless otherwise stated.

    Certification Courses

    What is the difference between Certificate and Non-Certificate courses?
    For non-Certificate courses, you will only be given a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course. No examination will be conducted.

    For Certificate courses, you are required to sit for a mandatory examination held at the end of the course. If you pass, a Certificate of Proficiency will be awarded. (Please refer to the respective course content page for the applicable examination fee).

    How long does it take for the Certificate of Completion to be ready?
    As far as possible, the Certificate of Completion is prepared for your collection on the final day of training. Otherwise, your certificate will be sent to you at your mailing address as indicated on the registration form.

    Computing Classes

    Would participants be provided with a trial version of the relevant programming/application software?
    No trial version of any programming/application softwares will be provided unless specifically stated.

    How many students will be sharing a computer terminal?
    For computing courses, each participant will get to practise on an individual PC.

    Will there be hands-on practice for computing courses?
    The typical methodology employed in computing classes is learning through practice. There will be hands-on practice for software application and programming-related courses. Computing courses are conducted using a lecture-cum-tutorial approach and participants are therefore encouraged to participate actively to work through designated tutorials.

    Which level will I attain after I have finished the course?
    Software applications, especially programming skills, require lots of practice and working experience. knowledge and techniques will be covered in the process of training, but how well you can master the techniques as taught will depend on your background experience well as your willingness to pursue further learning based on your preferred area of focus.

    Am I entitled to ask for the instructor’s help during computing classes?
    Yes, you may request the instructor’s assistance if you face difficulty during the learning process. However, your questions must be within the scope of the course topic. Information technology is broad and diverse, and it is therefore not expected that instructors should answer all your questions pertaining to Computing.

    SME Courses

    Are we eligible for any form of subsidy when we enroll for the courses under the SME Centre for Professional Development?
    There are two schemes available for you depending on your circumstances.

    If you are earning $1500 and below a month, the Skills Development Fund (SDF) can offer financial assistance to your company to sponsor your training needs. The company has to apply for SDF directly. This is applicable only if your courses are under company sponsorship.

    If you are a SME Manager, the SME Manager Training Scheme may be suitable for you. It offers financial assistance for management development courses that are not normally supported by SDF. SME Managers enrolling for broad-based management development programmes would be supported at $2.50 per trainee per hour. This is applicable only if your company is sponsoring your courses and it is incorporated as a SME.

    Do I have to wait for an approval from SDF before I can apply for a course with you?
    No, you do not have to wait. You may sign up with us and make payment to confirm a place first. SDF will reimburse your company directly with the appropriate amount of subsidy once the application is successful.

    Language Courses

    For the Language programmes, can I proceed straight to Level II or III if I already have the basic knowledge of the language?

    For all language programmes except the Mandarin and Korean courses, participants may enroll into the higher levels if they are confident of their understanding of the language. Currently, placement tests are conducted for Mandarin and Korean courses only to determine the participants' entry level.

    The Intensive Mandarin Programme

    What are the differences between the courses that award Professional Certificates and short courses?
    The certificate programme runs on a modular system. Students will have to complete 4 modules and sit for examinations before they obtain a Certificate of Proficiency. Classes are held during the day from Monday to Friday.
    Short Mandarin courses are about 40 to 80 hours per level. These courses are non-examinable and will lead to Certificates of Completion. Classes are held in the evening for two sessions a week.

    Can I enroll in the courses under Business & Commerce if I do not have any knowledge of Mandarin at all?
    No. You would need to have basic grasp of the language before you can attend these courses. The pre-requisite for these courses is proficiency in Mandarin at O'levels.

    Can I enroll in higher levels if I do not have basic knowledge of Mandarin?
    No. You need to enroll for either the Professional Certificate (Elementary) or the short courses in Basic Mandarin if you do not have any training in the language.

    What are placement tests?
    Placement tests are conducted for participants who wish to skip Professional Certificate (Elementary) or Mandarin I to enroll into higher levels. Each test takes approximately 15 minutes and tests reading and conversational skills. Our lecturers will conduct the test with each individual face-to-face.     What are the accreditations attained upon completion of the respective Professional Certificates?
    The Elementary level is equivalent to Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) level. For the Intermediate level, it is equivalent to attainment of Cambridge O'levels. Upon completion of Professional Certificate (Advanced), the level of proficiency is approximately equivalent to Cambridge AO'levels.

    Korean Language Programme

     

    Part-Time Courses

     

    What is the duration of the course?
    Lessons are conducted once a week. Each session is 2.5 hours long. The duration of the entire course is approximately 10 weeks.

     

    Will I be taught by the same teacher from Level I to VI?
    No, students will be accompanied by the same teacher for only the Basic levels. For the Intermediate and Advanced levels students will be exposed to different teachers who will draw on their individual experiences to introduce a range of methodologies.

     

    How will be classes be conducted?
    Lessons will be conducted in Korean and English, with the proportion of Korean used increasing as the student progresses to higher levels. Emphasis is placed on conversational practice during lessons. Students will also be given written assignments focusing on grammar and reading. It is essential that written assignments be completed by the next lesson for better understanding. Tests will be conducted on a regular basis to check students’ prowess.

     

    Will I be able to ascend to the next level without attaining a satisfactory attendance rate or final score?
    Such cases will be considered individually. However, the certificate of completion will only be awarded upon achieving an attendance rate of 80% ie the student must attend at least 8 sessions.

     

    I have some knowledge of the Korean language. How do I determine which class is suitable for me?
    All applicants who have previously studied Korean must sit for a written 25-minute placement test. Upon completion of the test they will be contacted by the teachers for an oral interview.

    Scholarship to Study in Korea

     

    What are the requirements for the scholarship to study in Korea?

    1. Students must have completed Basic Conversational Korean Level I and II or the equivalent of 50 lesson hours with NUS Extension.
    2. Students must have attained a grading of 80% for their academic performance. Grading is based on attendance, class participation, assignments and test results.
    3. Students must obtain a letter of recommendation from their teacher in charge for submission to the NUS Extension KLP co-coordinator.

    What are the application procedures for the scholarship to study in Korea?

    1. The student should submit the application form and an admission fee of $30 to her teacher in charge at least six weeks before the semester's commencement date.
    2. It will be necessary for foreign students, and Singaporeans who intend to stay in Korea for more than 90 days, to apply for a visa from the Embassy of Korea in Singapore.

     

     

    Course fee, Payment and Refund

    What are the applicable fees to pay?
    The applicable course fee is indicated on each course description. Courses are only offered over the scheduled number of intakes as indicated in the course catalogue. Applicable fees must be paid in full at the time of registration, either in cash, cheque (to be addressed to National University of Singapore) or by NETS.

    Does NUS Extension offer any discounts on published fees?
    Discounts available are:
    20% off the published fee for Staff and Matriculated students of NUS
    10% off the published fee for Alumni Members

    Participants are only entitled to privileges under one category of discount. They are not allowed to claim multiple discounts. Discounts are not allowed for payment towards examination fees.

    Please note that the discount will only be given to the student / staff / alumni member when he / she produces a copy of his/ her student / staff / AlumNUS card (or degree scroll) upon registration/payment.
