NUS Extension (#12-01 Park Mall)
NUS Science Summer Camp 2009
Have you ever …- assembled and programmed a robot to compete in a race with other robots?
- analysed your own DNA?
- wondered how much of what you watch in the drama serial “Crime Scene Investigation” is real and how much is dramatised?
Specially designed for 16 to 18 years old students with a keen interest in the discoveries and applications of the scientific world, the NUS Science Summer Camp by the Faculty of Science and NUS Extension aspires to stir curiosity, foster inquiry and inculcate a lifelong fascination for Science at the undergraduate level.
Our 2 week camp aims to achieve this by having an stimulating lineup of seminars, laboratory work, visitations to NUS's State-of-the-art research centres and experiential learning in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.
Seminars are based on modules that are currently taught in the Faculty of Science such as Nano-Science and Forensic Science, and conducted by Faculty academic professors. Laboratory sessions include observations of plant samples and analyzing the students' own DNA to discover a new understanding of biological and life sciences.
Fun and exciting activities have been arranged for the participants at the Singapore Science Centre where they will build robots and program them to race and sumo-wrestle, learn about the chemistry of food and even bake scones! What's more? Participants can catch an IMAX movie at the Omni-Max theatre and star-graze into the evening sky and catch the constellations at the OMNI-Planetarium and Observatory.
In between separating chemical components and baking scones, students will be trekking through the nature spots of Singapore which range from a swamp to a treetop walk with the help of experienced nature guides and be acquainted with the variety of tropical biodiversity here.
Beyond the academic element, the students will have a chance to interact with their local counterparts in a local high school and form new friendships. With accommodation arranged at one of the residential halls in NUS, they can experience NUS campus life and its vibrancy and dynamism.
