Principles of Applied Behaviour Psychology (101)

This course will focus on behavioral principles and their applications to diverse populations. Students will read about the philosophy of behaviorism, as well as experimental and applied behavior analysis. Students will learn the principles of operant conditioning including reinforcement, stimulus control, generalisation, extinction, punishment, and establishing operations. Students will also learn the principles of respondent conditioning, basic schedules of reinforcement, and procedures of shaping, chaining and fading, among others. After completing this course the student should be able to discuss:

  • The defining characteristics of behaviorism
  • Behavioral principles and procedures for increasing behavior
  • Behavioral principles and procedures for reducing behavior
  • Behavioral principles and procedures for promoting the generalisation and maintenance of behavior
