Contemporary New Ink Painting

Course Outline (8 sessions)

Part 1
You will be introduced to the basics of traditional Chinese Ink Painting as a foundation for Contemporary New Ink Painting. Basically, you will be taught how to use the brush, ink and rice paper to achieve amazing results.

You begin by painting the four flora motifs fundamental to Chinese Ink Painting: blossoms, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Upon mastering control over your brushstrokes, ‘ink work’ and layering techniques, you will learn how to add colour to an ink painting. Colour is essential to help you express a mood and add a contemporary feel to an otherwise traditional art work.

Part 2
You will build on the skills already learnt in Part 1. You become more confident at brushwork and the use of colours through painting tropical fruits, a familiar subject for anyone living in Singapore. Upon completion of these 8 lessons, you will be able to use the ink painting techniques learnt to create art pieces on various subjects.

Lesson 1

• Rice paper, its characteristics, qualities and use
• Colour ink, its unique features – warm colours, cold colours, neutrals
• Basics ink painting techniques– brushstrokes, line-work, ink- work, movement and application

Lesson 2

• Basic ink painting techniques: brushstrokes and ‘ink work’ –using the bamboo and chrysanthemum to compose a painting.

Lesson 3

• Application and choice of colour ink –using blossoms of various colours to compose a painting

Lesson 4

• Orchids and rocks

Lesson 5
• The importance of balance and use of colour – combining different subjects and scenes

Lesson 6
Tropical Fruits (I)

• Balance and composition –durians and mangosteens, the king and queen of fruits, make a regal painting

Lesson 7
Tropical Fruits (II)

• Balance and composition – rambutans in a basket, a cluster of fruits makes an interesting picture

Lesson 8
The Great Tropical Fruit Reunion

• Composition and cohesion –paint a fruit basket with durians, mangosteens, rambutans and mangoes, by bringing together multiple subjects through masterful brushstrokes, clever layering and careful choice of colour
  
  In conclusion, in just 8 lessons, you will be creating contemporary art pieces you can be proud of! You will know how to combine basic ink painting techniques with the choice of colour ink, to evoke a mood in your painting, and add a contemporary feel to your masterpiece.

上半部先由学习画梅兰竹菊入门，来认识毛笔和宣纸的性能及如何应用来取得神奇的效果。所谓的笔触、墨韵是水墨画的基本，同时加上中国画颜色来制造气氛，表达现代感。

下半部利用大家熟悉的南洋水果来加深笔法及颜色的应用。在完成这8节课程后，学员将能利用所学的笔法，来创作不同题材的作品。

第一节课
1) 纸的性能及应用： 生宣、熟宣、半熟宣的分辨
2) 颜色的特点──暖色；冷色；中间色。
3) 水墨画入门──笔墨的变化及应用

第二节课
用竹子与菊花构图来作画──学习笔墨之间的关系。

第三节课
各种梅花的搭配构图──颜色应用的搭配。

第四节课
兰花 及 石头。

第五节课
意境 的搭配 ──学习平衡的重要性，颜色之间的应用等。

第六节课
南洋水果 (一)
榴莲和山竹合作成画──学习平衡、构图。

第七节课
南洋水果 (二)
红毛丹和篮子的合作绘画──学习平衡、构图。

第八节课
南洋水果大团圆
榴莲、山竹、红毛丹、芒果、篮子的综合作绘画──学习在复杂的题材范围里，如何构图。

总结，在完成这个课程后，大家将能利用所学的基本笔法及颜色的应用来画不同题材的作品，也能表达出现代和感性的风格。
