Certificate in English Language (Elementary)

This course is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of English, but lack the confidence to use it. The focus is to enable students to build a good foundation in grammar and usage, and to provide them with opportunities to use English in practical situations.

This course is divided into three components:

Integrated Skills
This is the main component of the course and it adopts a thematic approach to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Within each thematic unit, grammar is taught explicitly and systematically. In addition, there will be emphasis on everyday speech acts that will enhance the students' ability to use English in social and practical contexts. Students will be introduced to the use of phonetic symbols and be encouraged to practise their speech and pronunciation so as to develop their speaking skills.

Oral Confidence
This component focuses on building the confidence of the student to speak and communicate in English. Activities and exercises will be centred around practical everyday situations that students will find relevant and interesting.

Reading Skills
This component focuses on building reading and comprehension skills through structured exercises and activities. Students will also be exposed to vocabulary centred around a wide range of topics.
