Certificate in English Language (Academic English I & II)

This course is designed for students who wish to use English for academic purposes. It aims to raise the students' proficiency level to meet the more complex demands of academic reading and writing. At the end of the course, students may proceed to prepare for standard English proficiency tests like TOEFL.

This course is divided into four components:

Integrated Skills
This is the main component of the course. Students will be challenged to explore grammatical areas not dealt with at the lower levels of the Certificate in English programme. They will be exposed to the more complex use of English from a wide array of sources and text-types. There will also be a strong focus on strengthening vocabulary in writing and speaking.

Literature
A literature text will be used to introduce students to aspects of critical analysis. Students will be encouraged to express their personal and critical responses to what they read. This will help them to develop reasoning and writing skills necessary for academic writing.

Newspaper Reading Skills
The newspaper will be used to provide many opportunities to hone the students' reading and comprehension skills. Besides being exposed to a wide and interesting array of topics for discussion, students will also acquire a wider range of vocabulary. At this level, students will be encouraged also to formulate their personal views about current affairs and to discuss them with each other.

Oral Confidence
At this level, the focus is to further develop the oral communication skills of the students. They will be given opportunities to express and present their opinions on a wide variety of topics.
