Biological Models of Desalination

Mangroves usually grow along water logged shorelines and absorb dissolved salt through the roots. The microscopic glands located mainly on leaf surfaces of some mangrove species help in maintaining the salt balance within cells by removing excess salts from tissues in the form of secretions. The mechanism underlying secretion in salt glands is unknown. We have recently developed novel methods to study the function of these glands. As these are efficient natural desalination devices, they might provide insights into developing novel, bio-inspired desalination devices in future.
