Professor Lee Hian Kee of the Department of Chemistry, and an Executive Committee member of NERI was the recipient of the Hyflux-Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) Award in Environmental Chemistry 2013.

In Singapore, maintaining a high quality of drinkable water is an utmost priority of PUB (Singapore Water Agency). Hence, the Agency is constantly looking for newer and better solutions to address current and future challenges in drinking water. Given that the current integrated water cycle is a complex system, Environment and Water Industry Programme Office (EWIPO) has setup an initiative called Visiting Professor Programme (VPP). The aim of VPP is to invite international expertise to enhance Singapore's manpower capacity development to meet future demand and changes in the water industry.

NERI, the point-of-contact for NUS Environment and Water Research, once again hosted the Environment and Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) colleagues to share with NUS community Singapore's Water Technology Roadmaps.

For the first time, NERI brought together colleagues, partners, students and staff in welcoming the Lunar New Year 2013 - Year of the Black Water Snake.

The Global Young Scientist Summit (GYSS@one-north) held from 20 - 25 January 2013 brought together bright young researchers from all over the world to Singapore to be inspired by internationally eminent science and technology leaders. Apart from lectures and plenary sessions, the participants had the opportunities to visit universities and research centres.

On 21st January 13, NERI and Thermo Fisher Scientific inked a Memorandum of Understanding to further strengthen their collaboration on the study of Metabolomics of Urban Water Systems. The Signing Ceremony was held at the Singapore Expo in conjunction with the opening of the 2nd Water Research Conference in Singapore.

In partnership with SWISSneX Singapore, NERI organized a seminar on Impacts of Microplastics on the Environment. The talk was given by Prof. Patricia Burkhardt-Holm on December 11, 2012. It was well-attended by faculty members, researchers, students and guests and also had a live real time telecast to our collaborator under the E2S2 (Energy and Environmental Sustainability Solutions for Megacities) programme, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Solutions for Megacities (E2S2) Programme hosted under NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) was officially launched on 15 Nov 12. NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, Professor Tan Eng Chye and Vice President for Research and International Relations of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Professor Zhang Wenjun graced the event with the unveiling of the plaque and the Chinese wood couplet carving.

NERI gathered experts in the university and organised the Land-Air Interactions and Climate Change in Southeast Asia Seminar on 09 November 2012. With support from the National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS), the seminar was aimed to identify key priority areas in land-air interactions and their importance in climate change at the regional scale. The discussions extended to the science and policy interface in this domain to shape priorities for NUS researchers.

As part of the talent grooming to support the fast-rising environment and water R&D and industry in Singapore, the National Research Foundation (NRF), through the Environment & Water Industry Programme Office (EWI) offers PhD scholarships to develop experts in Environment and Water Technologies (EWT) - the NRF (EWT) PhD Scholarships.

Mr. Choi Shing Kwok, Permanent Secretary of Singapore's Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MEWR), together with colleagues of PUB, and National Environment Agency (NEA) visited NERI and GE Singapore Water Technology Centre at NUS.

Prof. Ronald G. Prinn from Massachusetts Institute of Technology visited NUS and gave a lecture on CLIMATE CHANGE: A CHALLENGE TO SCIENCE, ECONOMICS, TECHNOLOGY and POLICY to invited guests on 9th Oct. 2012.

Recently, colleagues from the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) visited NERI. Led by Prof. Yongguan Zhu, Director General Institute - CAS, was exploring research collaborations with NUS.

Celebrate Family... Friends... and Life.
The Mid-autumn festival, also called the Mooncake Festival, is a tradition among Chinese where families get together during the time of the year when the moon is brightest and fullest, symbolizing unending family unity.

The NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) has successfully showcased several environmental and water-related research projects in the recent concluded Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2012.

The first ever Mandarin-taught Executive Training Program on Water Eco-efficiency was hosted by the Singapore Peking Oxford Research Enterprise (SPORE) under NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) last February 2012.
