Prof. Holm at the Seminar.

In partnership with SWISSneX Singapore, NERI organized a seminar on Impacts of Microplastics on the Environment. The talk was given by Prof. Patricia Burkhardt-Holm on December 11, 2012. It was well-attended by faculty members, researchers, students and guests and also had a live real time telecast to our collaborator under the E2S2 (Energy and Environmental Sustainability Solutions for Megacities) programme, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

Prof. Holm is an expert on sustainability and water issues and is currently the Director of the interdisciplinary Institute of Man-Society-Environment at the University of Basel, Switzerland.

The use of microplastics is more prevalent nowadays. There is a growing concern as its debris has been found even in the food chains of aquatic organisms. Her talk addressed the need to further investigate and understand how microplastics impact the environment and human health.

This is part of an ongoing effort by NERI to provide a scientific platform for international experts to share their knowledge and expertise with the NUS community and industry.
