The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Solutions for Megacities (E2S2) Programme hosted under NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) was officially launched on 15 Nov 12. NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, Professor Tan Eng Chye and Vice President for Research and International Relations of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Professor Zhang Wenjun graced the event with the unveiling of the plaque and the Chinese wood couplet carving.
E2S2 is funded by Singapore National Research Foundation (NRF) under the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) framework, NUS, SJTU, and with strong support from Shanghai Municipal Government and local industry.
The 5-year collaborative research programme will bring SJTU top researchers to work in Singapore with NUS top researchers. Apart from pushing the research frontier of urban solutions, the researchers will also have the opportunities in test-bedding their research work at two different sites; one in Shanghai (a megacity) and Singapore (a land-scarce city) to develop capabilities needed in solving coupled problems characteristic of complex city systems.
The Launch was witnessed by representatives from NRF, industry and colleagues and staff from both universities.
