ABOUT THE SPEAKER

MR. STEVEN GAN, 45, began his career in journalism in Hong Kong 15 years ago. In 1999 Gan launched the country's first and only independent Media, Malaysiakini (Malaysia Now). Since it went live, Malaysiakini has become one of the most influential news websites in the country. Malaysiakini received the Free Media Pioneer 2001 award from the Vienna-based International Press Institute, and Gan is a recipient of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award 2000.

The online website was ranked 18 on Asiaweek's Power 50 in 2001, and Gan was also selected as one of the 50 most influential individuals in Business Week's 'Stars of Asia'. In 2003, he was among seven Malaysians picked by Asia Inc's 'Who's hot in Asia?

In 2007, Gan was selected as a member of the World Economic Forum's International Media Council, which meets annually in Davos, Switzerland.

KEYNOTE SYNOPSIS

How can a high-brow Malaysian political news website able to sustain commercial operations for more than 9 years, when many other sites with deep-pocket backers have failed? Since its founding in 1999, Malaysiakini has not only survived the dotcom crash, police raids and criticisms from powerful political figures, but has been widely considered to be one of the leading independent paid-news agencies in Malaysia. It has been able to generate quality contents, grow its readership, charge subscriptions from its contents, and attract talents to join the company. Steven Gan, co-founder and Editor-in-chief of Malaysiakini.com, will tell the story.
