Abstract
An important contributor to the success of Taiwan
in high tech industrial development is the large
number of Taiwanese scientists and engineers who
have studied and worked in North America. This overseas
Chinese diaspora has led to a high number of high
tech start-ups both in Taiwan as well as in the
US (particularly the Silicon Valley). A symbiotic
relationship exists between the two communities
through the dense network of people and a two way
flow of ideas, technologies and investments. The
Monte Jade as a business and professional networking
organization has played an important role in facilitating
the development of this people network. In this
talk, Dr. Liu and Dr. Chuang will share their unique
insights on Taiwanese high tech start-up and globalization
strategies, the role of overseas Chinese business
and professional networks in facilitating Taiwanese
high tech start-up and globalization, and possible
lessons for high tech start-ups in other newly industrialized
economies like Singapore. About the

Background of Monte Jade
The mission of Monte Jade Science and Technology
Association is to promote the cooperation and the
mutual flow of technology and investment between
Taiwan and the U.S., in part echoing Taiwan's need
for advanced technology transfer. The Association
creates social and technical opportunities for professionals
and corporations at both sides of the Pacific to
share their valuable experiences in research, investment,
and business. Following the Chinese tradition of
inspiring future generations to excel beyond the
forefathers, the Association also utilizes its resources
to assist the new generation of professionals in
learning the experiences of other members so as
to promote the power of shared knowledge to the
benefits of the Chinese high-tech communities of
Taiwan and the U.S. MJSTA was formed in 1990 by
a group of Taiwanese scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs
in Silicon Valley. Today, the Association has established
11 chapters in the US and Canada. The Monte Jade
Taiwan chapter was formed in May 2001. MJ Taiwan
has more than 450 professional & corporate members
including many successful technopreneurs, prominent
venture capitalists, top lawyers and accountants.
Among them are luminaries such as Nobel Laureate
Lee Yuan-tseh of Academia Sinica, Morris Chang of
TSMC, Robert Tsao of UMC and Stan Shih of Acer Computers.
In March 2002, the various chapters in North America
& Taiwan decided to intgrate under an umbrella known
as MJSTA Global or Monte Jade Global. Its Executive
Committee comprises mainly prominent members in
the US, with a few, including Dr Liu, from Taiwan.
The Chairman of Monte Jade Global is Mr Jim Sha,
