Abstract
Massive declines in stock markets worldwide, continued
failures of dotcoms and earning downgrades of even
established technology companies. Does this spell
the doom of the new economy? Despite the seemingly
gloomy environment, new technologies and business
models are still constantly being created by enterprising
individuals in the US and developed further with
investments from smart venture capitalists. In this
forum, Mr. Timothy C. Draper will share his views
and passion on entrepreneurship and venture capital,
which are both very close to his heart.
About the Speaker
Timothy C. Draper is the Founder and a Managing
Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson. On behalf of
Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Mr. Draper serves on the
boards of Chroma Graphics, Homestead, I-Cube, MacroWeb,
meVC.com, PLX Technologies NASDAQ: PLXT), Tumbleweed
Communications (NASDAQ: TMWD), and Upside Media.
His original suggestion to use "viral marketing"
in web-based e-mail to geometrically spread an Internet
product to its market was instrumental to the successes
of Hotmail and Four11. Previous successes included
Parametric Technology (PMTC), GoTo.com (NASDAQ:
GOTO), Digidesign (AVID), Preview Travel (TVLY),
eFax (EFAX), Four11 (YHOO), Combinet (CSCO), and
Redgate (AOL). Mr. Draper launched the Draper Affiliate
Network, a group of regional early-stage venture
capital funds, including Zone Ventures in Los Angeles,
Draper Atlantic in Reston, VA, Draper Triangle in
Pittsburgh, PA, Wasatch Ventures in Salt Lake City,
UT, Timberline Ventures in Portland, OR, Polaris
Fund in Anchorage, AK, and Draper Fisher Jurvetson
Gotham in New York. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering
from Stanford University, and an MBA from Harvard
Business School. He has worked as a Marketing Engineer
for Hewlett-Packard, and was Assistant to the President
of Apollo Computer. He worked in high technology
corporate finance at Alex. Brown & Sons before founding
Draper Associates (now Draper Fisher Jurvetson).
