Abstract
About 3-4 years ago, there was a tremendous amount
of excitement created by the new economy and funding
was more easily available for start-ups and entrepreneurs.
We saw many dot com businesses sprouting in Singapore
and in the region. The hype was so well propagated
that many people and companies pumped in vast amounts
of money to take a stake in such companies at very
high valuations. Then the euphoria ended in April
2000, when the whole world came crashing on the
dot com economy. The crash happened so rapidly and
affected almost all countries at almost the same
time. The rest is history and even until today,
we are seeing companies folding up all over the
world. Many had burned millions of dollars before
finally throwing in the towel. There are examples
of companies in USA that burned a couple of million
of dollars before closing shop. This talk deals
with what happened? Have we seen the end of the
Internet economy? Was the new economy so short lived
that the 'old' economy businesses are the only ones
that are still viable? Can we still breed and see
successful entrepreneurship in the post dot com
era? Important lesson learnt.
