Abstract of Dr. Scott Shane presentation:
This presentation will summarize what I have learned
from five years of research on university spin-offs
at MIT and other academic institutions in the United
States. It will describe the trend toward the creation
of spin-off companies; explain why spin-offs are desirable;
identify which inventions and industries are more likely
to create spin-offs; explain why some universities generate
more spin-offs than others; describe the role of people
in the spin-off process; explain how university spin-offs
are financed; and identify the factors that enhance
the performance of university spin-offs.
