Abstract of Dr. Scott Shane presentation:
This presentation will summarize the general understanding
of academics about high technology entrepreneurship.
It will explain what we know about the existence and
identification of opportunities; identifying customer
needs for new technology; the evolution of markets;
patterns of technical change; incumbent failure and
new firm entry; innovation in large and small firms;
protecting intellectual property; appropriating the
returns to innovation; technical standards and increasing
returns; financing new ventures and managing risk and
uncertainty.
Brief Biography of Dr. Scott Shane:
Dr. Scott Shane is Professor of Economics, Case Western
Reserve University. Prior to joining Case Western Reserve
University, Dr. Shane was a Professor of Entrepreneurship
and chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship at the
Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of
Maryland. He currently serves as editor of the Research
and Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Division
of Management Science. His research examines how entrepreneurs
discover and evaluate opportunities, assemble resources
and design organizations. He has also taught in executive
education programs in Norway, Poland, New Zealand and
the United States. Dr. Shane earned his Ph.D at the Wharton
School of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining
University of Maryland, he taught at the Sloan School
of Management at MIT. His more than 40 articles on enterpreneurship
and innovation management have been published in leading
academic journals such as Management Science, Organization
Science, Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Business
Venturing. Dr. Shane's research has been quoted in The
Wall Street Journal, Inc. and Entrepreneur Magazine. He
is currently holding a visiting professorship appointment
at the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre.
