Abstract
In this lecture, Dr. Phil Ruffles will discuss the
importance and challenges associated with managing technology
and its implication of e-Business within Rolls-Royce.
He will include a variety of examples, including Rolls-Royce's
world leading wide chord fan blade technology. The technology
application section will outline the new product introduction
process, covering quality control procedures and risk
assessment. Product and work breakdown structures and
the use of integrated project teams will also be considered,
along with the application of information technology,
including product data management (an important e-Business
application).
Moving on to technology acquisition, the research and
technology acquisition process and how it is linked
to the product life cycle will be considered, before
reviewing the underpinning technology management structure
and use of technology assessment to develop a balanced
technology acquisition programme. Finally, technology
transfer mechanisms and the use of global research will
be outlined.
