Abstract
Joint industry/university/government research is an increasingly
common form of conducting both basic and applied research.
In DuPont, expenditures to external technology sources
increased from $20MM in 1993 to over $45MM in 1995. DuPont
has many documented success stories of how it was able
to meet a business need faster, cheaper and with a better
technology because of its leveraged activities with external
global technology sources. There are still many concerns,
but the challenge is to make good deals which address
the classic issues of intellectual property rights, publication,
secrecy, academic nepotism, etc., right up front and not
always live the old model of doing everything ourselves
because we can't deal with these concerns. In today's
world, each business needs to find the right balance of
internal and external technology resources and be proactive
in obtaining value from the technology they develop.
About the Speaker
Dr Guschl joined DuPont in 1973, as a research chemist
in Pigments R&D at the Experimental Station, after
receiving a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University
of Illinois. Dr Guschl transferred to Potomac River in
1978, where he was involved in Technical Service and Technical
Supervisory assignments in explosives. R&D assignments
in Nylon Intermediates include Research Supervisor at
the Experimental Station (1980) and Director of the Sabine
River Laboratory (1983). As Program Manager at Savannah
River Laboratory, Atomic Energy Division, he was responsible
for technical development efforts in support of chemical
processes and environmental protection. In 1987, he returned
to commercial DuPont as Technical Manager for intermediates
for nylon, polyester, acrylonitrile, ethylene, and PPDA
for Kevlar*. With the creation of DuPont Chemicals, he
was named Director-R&D for the same areas, then Director-R&D
for Chemicals and Intermediates. In 1993 Dr Guschl joined
DuPont Central Research & Development as Director,
Corporate Technology Transfer. In 1999, Dr Guschl assumed
responsibility for DuPont's Office of Education. Dr Guschl
serves on numerous Technology Transfer advisory boards
